FROM THE CLAIMS DESK – June 2026 in New Zealand Inland Revenue (IR) compliance activity remained heightened throughout June 2026, with Audit Shield claims activity sitting 30% higher compared to June 2025. The data continues to show a sustained focus on compliance, verification, and review activity across a range of tax obligations. More than half of Audit Shield claims activity from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 originated from areas often outside the accountant's direct control. Our latest analysis of Audit Shield claims activity from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 found that more than half of claims activity arose from categories often influenced by client-controlled information, transactions and business decisions, rather than matters directly managed by the accountant. The findings reinforce that professional fee exposure extends well beyond traditional income tax reviews and can arise from a broad range of ATO and other government revenue authority review activities.
