    Thrilled to share some incredible research coming out of Cornell University! Jiaying Fang and her team have introduced a game-changing framework called E-MPC. In human-centered robotics, true autonomy isn't just about a machine finishing its task perfectly. If the user ends up feeling completely passive, disengaged, or overwhelmed, the interaction is not optimal. Instead of treating humans as a simple "backup plan" when the robot gets confused, E-MPC treats user engagement and mental workload as core priorities, predicting exactly when to step in and when to back off. And guess what? They used our Gen3 robotic arm! 🦾 To test the framework, the team ran a real-world bite acquisition study. The data speaks for itself: 9 out of 10 participants preferred this collaborative approach over traditional baselines. It gave them a true sense of agency and satisfaction without adding any extra mental strain. Massive congratulations to Jiaying Fang, Joyce Yang, Zhanxin Wu, Bohan Yang, and Tapomayukh Bhattacharjee on this phenomenal team project.     Task success is not enough for human-centered robots. A robot can complete the task and still leave the user feeling passive, disengaged, or overloaded. Check out our work E-MPC: An Engagement-Aware Human-in-the-loop Framework for Robotic Systems at #RSS2026. E-MPC helps robots jointly reason about task success, user engagement, and user workload. Instead of treating humans only as “backup” when the robot fails, E-MPC reasons about when and how to involve the user throughout the task. E-MPC builds an interaction dynamics model that predicts how the user’s engagement changes over time. The model captures how different interaction choices can shift user engagement closer to or farther from the user’s desired level. E-MPC also models user workload as a constraint. The robot tracks how much user workload it has placed and avoids asking too much. This lets E-MPC balance meaningful involvement with manageable workload, rather than simply maximizing user input. With these models, E-MPC performs model predictive control over both task success and user state. At each step, it chooses whether to act autonomously or ask the user different types of questions, optimizing for task success, engagement regulation, and workload constraints over a short horizon. We evaluate E-MPC in simulation across different user personas and in a real-robot bite acquisition user study. The user study results demonstrate that E-MPC improves engagement tracking, interaction satisfaction, and perceived agency, while maintaining task success and keeping workload manageable. 9/10 participants preferred E-MPC over the baseline.     9.7 billion people: That’s a lot of mouths to feed. Which means farming has to get a lot smarter. And that is precisely why researchers at Purdue University Autonomy, Internet of Things (IoT), and Robotics Professional Master's Programs developed the P-AgBot: to help tackle challenges in the agricultural sector. Its main job is to roll right under the crop canopy to monitor, sense, and collect critical field data.🌾 We are incredibly proud to see our Gen3 lite robotic arm playing a key role in such an important mission!     By 2050, the world's population is projected to reach 9.7 billion, placing increasing demands on food production and the resources that support it. At Purdue, researchers are helping address this challenge through the Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture (IoT4Ag), developing technologies that enable more efficient, sustainable farming practices. Featured here is the Purdue Agricultural Robot (P-AgBot), a ground-based robotic platform designed for in-row and under-canopy crop monitoring, sensing, and physical sampling. Equipped with advanced sensors, a robotic arm, and AI-enabled navigation and mapping capabilities, the system helps researchers collect critical crop and soil data throughout the growing season. P-AgBot can measure crop attributes such as plant height, corn ear height, and stalk diameter, while also supporting the deployment and monitoring of buried soil sensors. These technologies are part of a broader effort to advance precision agriculture and help address the global challenges of food, energy, and water security. For residents like Audrey, who used to be very independent, it's hard to see yourself losing functions. But that's exactly what assistive technology is here for!     Every year, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games try to make things bigger and better, but this year they really RAMMP-ed up! We had the pleasure of hitting the expo floor at Booth #439, where Nathaniel Swenson teamed up with our friends at ATDev : Owen Kent and Todd Roberts ! And just upstairs, above the expo hall, our partners at HERL set up a live demo, allowing attendees to become some of the very first people in the world to test-drive the early prototype for the ARPA-H RAMMP project.🦼 This next-gen robotic wheelchair is being built to integrate seamlessly with our upcoming Jaco, and seeing veterans navigate it is pure inspiration. Huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, test the tech, and share their stories with us! 💙 ___ Chaque année, les National Veterans Wheelchair Games placent la barre encore plus haut, mais cette année, ils ont vraiment mis le paquet avec le projet RAMMP ! Nous avons eu le plaisir d'être présents sur le salon au stand n°439 aux côtés de nos amis d'ATDev : Owen Kent et Todd Roberts ! Et juste au-dessus du hall d'exposition, nos partenaires du HERL proposaient une démonstration en direct.
