In the late 18th century the metric system came into use and has been adopted almost all countries in the world.
Most countries have adopted the metric system officially over a transitional period where both units are used for a set period of time.
Originally run at a distance of miles, in 1972 it was changed to 2,400 metres to conform to the metric system.
The process has progressed slowly but the metric system has now replaced the previous imperial units.
In locations using the metric system, the cylinder is usually marked in mm and will measure up to 250mm 1 of rainfall.
In countries where the metric system is used, the glass may be 1 m.
This weight has remained practically constant to the present day (some minute changes have resulted from its legal redefinition in the metric system of weights).
